How Testosterone Works

Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily in the testicles. In men, testosterone plays a key role in the development of the testes and prostate. It is also responsible for promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as the growth of body hair, increased muscle mass, and increased bone mass.

Testosterone is responsible for sperm production throughout life and is also responsible for a young man’s deepening of the voice and pattern of hair growth. Testosterone also contributes to male aggressiveness, energy, and is essential to sex drive and sexual performance. Testosterone is the most powerful androgen (a group of steroid hormones whose name is derived from the Greek words for “man-maker”).
